Preparing for The Labour and Delivery

Like the Boy Scouts Motto says -
"Be Prepared"or else you could be in trouble.

I still remember my first birthing and my own apprehension even though I was a registered nurse and had worked in the labour and delivery room in hospitals.

I had no-one to help me or to show me what to do and I had never seen puppies born.

My basic advice to you is ----

Read everything you can on the subject by reputable breeders.

You'll find more information at Pinnacle Pet Supply and a whelping chart available as well at Pinnacle Pet Supply

Weeks ahead, begin saving newspapers.
(You're going to use a lot of paper.)
Consult with your Veterinarian 2 weeks before the 'due date' for a pregnancy check.
Ask if this Veterinarian will be available to you if a problem arises with the whelping.
If not, where should you go for help.
Keep that phone number taped to the phone near the whelping area.

Prepare a whelping Supply kit yourself.

Build a Whelping Box

  • You'll need 2 stainless steel or plastic forceps at least to clamp the    cords.

  • A sharp scissors to cut the cord.

  • A postal scale and basket to weigh the puppies.

  • A plentiful supply of clean wash cloths or old cloths torn into    12x12" squares for holding the slippery puppies with.

  • 2 hot water bottles or a heating pad

  • A cardboard box or clothes basket lined with soft towels to    put the pups into as needed.
This is where you'll put the hot  water bottles or the heating   pad turned on LOW and covered   with a couple of towels.

  •    (You have to be careful not to overheat the puppies.)
  • A rectal thermometer to take the bitch's temperature with    and  some vaseline.

  • A wall thermometer to make sure the room is warm enough    for new-borns (it should be about 80 - 85 degrees F)

  • A small wash basin, hand soap and towel

  • A small amount of disinfectant to soak your forceps and    scissors in, between puppies in the basin.

  • Warm water to wash the bitch's rear end after the delivery is    over.

  • Some method of heating the whelping box or the area, that    won't overheat the dam or puppies.

  •        Or you can check out this Whelping Supply Kit, and also order my whelping DVD.
